Devon Green: The Long Date, The Round Count

Opening Reception: Friday, June 3rd, 6-10pm
Show Dates: June 3rd - June 31st, 2011
Buzz Gallery/ 2318 Telegraph Ave Oakland California          “The Long Date the Round Count” examines concepts of time keeping and the ways in which it’s understanding and influence are shaped by the different mediums used to express it. Green draws from an array of influences. Working from sources as disparate as Mesoamerican and Hindu calendar systems, newspaper clippings of events both disastrous and comical, foreign book covers and esoteric language, he manages to render his subject matter in ways that draw parallels between the ancient and the immediate, the literal and the mythical.

Green keeps time physically; making objects that take as their subject matter concepts of time keeping. White washed black canvas and appropriated text of Lolita covers that date back to the 70’s. Party letters make out the message “Kali Yuga” on canvas. Many hours of sound recorded Cassette Tapes are marked with Mayan hieroglyphs.  His gained insight from his influences denotes a feeling of the times and relation to consciousness of cosmic order.

Devon Green lives and works in Santa Cruz, CA. He will be exhibiting his sagacious new works at Buzz Gallery for the month of June.

A solo Exhibition of Works on Paper by Jeff Stratford

Opening Reception: Friday, April 1st, 6-9pm
Show Dates: April 1st- May 2nd, 2011
Buzz Gallery/ 2318 Telegraph Ave Oakland California

“Doing Things On Accident, On Purposely On Accident” is Jeff Stratford’s premiere works on paper solo exhibition at Buzz Gallery. Stratford uses experimentation through drawing as a requisite step in actualizing his ideas on paper. Jeff then uses the computer as an organizational tool to unite his his imagery through collage.

The drawings reference themselves. Building blocks of mark making create a pattern-like surface on the paper reminiscent of cells, eyes, or fractals.  Through these marks Jeff has developed a unique way of producing his creatures, buildings, and plants, and the elements surrounding them. Jeff incorporates experimentation into each drawing to get a variety found in all things natural. Drawing on construction paper using an array of opaque markers and pens, he works off of past experiments/drawings. His work balances his intentions and his accidents therefore maximizing his possibilities.

Jeff Stratford lives and works in East Oakland and is originally from Southern California. He began his undergraduate degree at UC Berkeley as a Physics Major, and later switched his focus in the Arts Department, where he was able to directly experiment; graduating with a dual degree. We are elated to have Jeff showing his works from the past 5 years at Buzz Gallery. Come by and see!
